Following in the footsteps of the show of solidarity after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a non-partisan movement is asking that voters wear hoodies on Election Day.

“Hoodie Vote,” aims to build on the same energy occurring after the 17-year-old's death, and channel it towards civil engagement. The movement is alive on more than 50 college campuses and in hundreds of cities and towns across the nation.

“It's not about capitalizing on something tragic,” said co-founder and national coordinator, Trell Thomas. “We want to turn tragedy into triumph. It's another opportunity to send a message that while some thought we were robbing, killing, stealing, and looking ‘suspicious' in our hoodies, we are out here working, making a difference, and changing the world in our hoodies.

Endorsed by a variety of artists and activist including Lil' B, package Gregory, and Jasiri X, the grassroots movement wants more than anything to see young people of color voting in hoodies, as an attempt at pushing back against stereotypes.

The official “Hoodie Vote” sweatshirt is available for sale on http://hoodievote.wordpress.com/, or voters can wear their own.  On Election Day, “Hoodie Vote” wants its supporters to take photos of themselves voting in their hoodies, and share though social media outlets under the hashtag #hoodievote.
