An oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded Friday (Nov. 16) leaving two workers missing, and 11 airlifted to a hospital.
The blasts occurred off the coast of Louisiana, officials from the Coast Guard revealed.
There have been no confirmed casualties, but four of the 11 were transported to West Jefferson Medical Center and have been listed in critical condition. Early reports suggested that as many as 15 people were unaccounted for, but they have since been located.
According to the Coast Guard, a Black Elk Energy Co. oil and natural gas platform caught fire after workers used a torch to cut a line holding 28 gallons of oil. Black Elk CEO, John Hoffman said that workers should have used a saw versus the torch that led to the fire.
Although not producing oil, 22 people were aboard the platform at the time of the explosion.
Rescue crews scoured a 17-mile area near the Grand Isle, La. in search of the missing workers.
News of the blast comes one day after BP agreed to pay $4.5 billion in fines, and plead guilty to manslaughter plus other criminal charges, for the 2010 massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
