White NBC Blogger Writes Chief Keef’s Music Is A “Minstrel Show”

Chicago rapper Chief Keef and his debut album Finally Rich just hit the shelves yesterday, but already critics of the 17-year-old rapper have surfaced. In Keef’s backyard, a blogger for a local NBC affiliate has taken aim at the Windy City artist by referring to his music as a “minstrel show.”

Blogger Edward McClelland published an opinion piece this morning on Chicago NBC 5’s website this morning, explaining that until last week he intended to purchase Chief Keef’s major label debut.  McClelland was especially critical of Keef’s output, but admitted he was curious about the teenaged sensation’s music and its depiction of Chicago’s highly publicized gang violence. Moved to change his interest in Keef’s music by the Newtown shooting tragedy, McClelland attacked the burgeoning “Drill” scene.

From Edward McClelland’s blog entry:

[F]rom what I’ve heard of it, is pretty lunkheaded: simplistic rhymes, primitive beats. But it’s also a window into the world that has made Chicago the murder capital of America, and that piqued my curiosity…Since last week’s murders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, though, I haven’t had the stomach for any violent entertainment…I also don’t want to pay $14 for the minstrel show of listening to a real live South Side thug. I don’t want to support a scene that makes gangbanging a resume builder for music success.

McClelland is well within rights to question his investment in Chief Keef’s music as a result of the horrific events at Sandy Hook Elementary.

However, why were the violent, gang-related deaths of countless African-Americans in his beloved Chicago over the summer not enough to sway him from buying Finally Rich in the first place?

because you wont hear a song glamorizing the death of a mass killing of children. but you will hear a song about gang members busting guns and killing each on everyday radio. people are desensitized about the topic of ‘thug life’. a bunch a white children being killed is appalling and shouldn’t even be mentioned. i think black people need to fix their mentalities desperately.

Gang or thug life is completely irrelevant to the massacre that happened in CT. The man who shot those children was in no way affiliated with the thug life lifestyle and or mentality. To call an African American’s album a “minstrel show” is in completely poor taste and has highly racist connotations. Poor taste.

Are you serious? how is describing a poorly made album racist? As for the gang and thug lifestyle, just a bunch of non-men trying to do whatever they can with no useable skills and borderline illiteracy to make an impression; they should be fenced in somewhere.

The pressure should be put onJimmy Iovine owner Interscope
Records. He’s Jewish and no way would he promote anyone that said
anything derogatory about anyone Jewish, let alone killing a Jewish person.
But if it’s Black against Black anthing goes. Americans including American Idol should keep our dollars away from Jimmy Iovine until he stops promoting murder.

I have to contend that whatever it takes to make an issue like what’s being promoted through Chief Keef’s records sting, so be it. The is crimes in Chicago are no more or less important than that of the slaying that took place in Newtown. These children are being subject to this environment daily and just because it’s being “promoted” it represents a culture that has to face death DAILY, whether they “choose” to live that lifestyle or not. Whatever means it takes to make this type of behavior unacceptable I feel helps the cause. And Chief Keef’s music IS a modern day minstril show, the choice of words fit the bill perfectly…and I’m a black man that sees the relevance and similarities. He’s dressing up, acting out sterotypes and being led by a puppetmaster, telling him this garbage music makes him “cool”. Sounds like a minstrel show to me. Certainly isn’t helping my nor my children’s cause for the perception of young black men in America, why do you think these middle aged white men keep killing us for no clear reason other than what they assume to be danger??

No thanks
