Few in the rap world expected underground kingpins Killer Mike and El-P to create a smash on their collaborative R.A.P. Music project last year. After dropping one of 2012’s best releases, the unlikely duo sat down with The Combat Jack Show and broke down their undeniable chemistry.

“That’s why we did it (R.A.P. Music) because in the first couple of days, we knew we had something special,” explained El-P. “We knew this was gonna work and we also knew that it was gonna work to our advantage because no one thought it would work.”

Co-host Dallas Penn interjected early on to break down one of Killer Mike’s verses from the blistering “Untitled” track, this after transcribing and reading aloud the bars. El-P says that the burly rapper freestyled his verses, which Killer Mike says was a product of the producer-rapper relationship that they forged.

“El really pushed me to personalize more,” said Killer Mike of his performance. “El really pushed on this one like ‘give them your fears, your angst.’”

Late last month, Killer Mike and El-P joined forces officially as the duo, Run The Jewels, dropping their heat rock single, “Get It.” With a new project coming this summer via Fool’s Gold along with a tour, expect to hear a lot more from this unique pairing down the road.
