The Reverend Al Sharpton said that President-Elect Donald Trump reached out to him by phone, a move that surprised the veteran civil rights leader and media figure. Sharpton shared details of the call with The New York Daily News, and he said they both discussed their glaring political differences.
Sharpton explained that Trump called him Thursday morning shortly after a meeting he held with ranking officials in his National Action Network group. While the chat wasn’t lengthy, Sharpton did say the discussion was amicable.

Sharpton said he was shocked to get a call Thursday morning from President-elect Donald Trump while he was convening a board meeting for the National Action Network he runs.
“We were straight up with each other,” Sharpton told the Daily News. “I will continue to disagree with him. I’m not psychoanalyzing why he called. He and I were clear on our positions.”
Sharpton said Trump called to thank him for positive remarks he made during an appearance on a morning television program during which he praised the billionaire’s outer-borough business achievements.
The discussion doesn’t mean that Sharpton and Trump are forming some feel-good coalition but instead appeared to be a move to get the attention of one of the most vocal opponents of the incoming administration.
