Chance The Rapper just donated $1 million to the Chicago Public School system. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on his child custody case.

As the prophet Ice Cube once said, “Here’s what they think about you.”

Chance The Rapper is finding out what can happen when you not only confront the establishment but actually out do it as well. After meeting the Governor of Illinois to hopefully get some support for his hometown’s failing school system, he walked away feeling “disappointed” and empty-handed after the talks led nowhere. But, instead of sulking, Chance dug into his own pockets and donated $1 million to CPS and challenged other concerned citizens and corporations to donate to a fund created specifically to give them financial aid for arts programs.

But, just as most times when a rapper does something “good,” haters go digging around to find some dirt. Chance, who has been labeled as a “clean” rapper despite naming his breakthrough mixtape after a hallucinogen and always keeping a cigarette behind his ear, doesn’t really have any dirt to be found. But that didn’t stop Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mary Mitchell from trying.

In a piece published late Wednesday evening, Mitchell made much ado about nothing in bringing up Chance’s child custody hearings with his ex-girlfriend Kirsten Corley. Corley and their 18-month old daughter are currently living in a home that Chance is paying for as Corley is unemployed. Mitchell also brought up that Chance is asking the court to set any child support payments to be lower than mandated, which is currently 20 percent of net income. Chance is also asking that “both parties” be held responsible for the cost of raising the child. In addition, Chance has requested that any agreements made be kept secret in order to protect the privacy and safety of Corley and their child.

If you’re waiting for the part where someone goes off and starts making threats, keep waiting. Because nothing of the sort has happened. But Mitchell feels that the case could hurt Chance’s “good guy” image.

She writes:

Right now, Chance looks like a hero in the ‘hood.

But child support is an emotionally charged issue that plays a big role in the high level of poverty in the black community.

If this personal issue is handled callously in the public, Chance the Rapper’s clean-cut image could take a big hit.

After all, you can’t hand out money to benefit children you don’t know and come off looking like you are being stingy when it comes to your own child.

In response, Chance posted a video of himself, Corley and their child looking like one big happy family. In the video he advises the media to do their jobs. Then he simply tells people poking around in his business to “get the f*ck back.”
