Officials Work To Rename “N*gga Lake” In New York

Officials in New York State are working to rename some landmarks recently discovered to have racially offensive names.

Locations with names like “N*gger Lake,” “N*gger Road” and “N*gger River” were recently discovered by state environmental scientists in spots throughout the state. The locations still appear on old state maps.

“It was a shock to us. The term is very offensive,” said Scott Stoner, a research scientist for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. “These are not regulations that get looked at often, but somebody discovered it.”

Earlier this week, a motion was made to abolish the n-work from NY’s regulations. The name changes must be proposed under a whole new ruling, because the state can’t rename local roads and water bodies.

The agency proposed it as a “consensus rule,” omitting the need for any public hearings. “DEC has determined that no person is likely to object to the adoption of the rule as written,” the register states.

“The Department will take action to move forward in removing any offensive term from the Lands and Forests map in terms of how it is referenced,” said Lori Severino, a spokeswoman for the agency, in a statement.
