Progressive raps fans should be well acquainted with Cali rap group Blackalicious. For those of you who are not, the duo consists of rapper Gift Of Gab with production from Chief Xcel and they have been putting in work musically for year (see Nia, Blazing Arrow), just typically below the mainstream radar. The Sacramento, CA repping artists are re-releasing their debut EP, Melodica, and the new version will include the hard to find cut “Changes.”
“Changes,” is rare track from the Blackalcious vaults. Produced in part by one DJ Shadow, along with Blackalicious producer Chief Xcel offers dusty drum loops and subtle, textured samples.
The track was also co-produced by James Lavelle of the British “trip-hop” group U.N.K.L.E. that DJ Shadow was once a party of. In late March, new broke of Gift of Gab’s battle with diabetes and that he was awaiting (and still is) a kidney transplant. On the next page, check out Gab’s new video for “Protocol” off his The Next Logical Progression album, out now.
Listen to “Changes” below.
