Since his controversial Tumblr post weeks ago, Frank Ocean and his s-xual preference has been a hot topic in musical circles. For the most part, Frankie has let the music do the talking for him, but he spoke to The Guardian and finally talked about coming out the closet at length.

While many speculated that he chose that time to come out to boost his album sales, Frank says it was “about my own sanity and my ability to feel like I’m living a life where I’m happy when I wake up in the morning, and not with this freakin’ boulder on my chest.”

“I wished at 13 there was somebody I looked up to who would have said something like that, who would have been transparent in that way,” Ocean told the Guardian in an interview that will be published tomorrow.

“People are just afraid of things too much,” Ocean said about potential backlash he can expect. “Sure, evil exists, extremism exists. Somebody could commit a hate crime and hurt me. But they could do the same just because I’m black. They could do the same just because I’m American.”
