Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan came up with a clever way to dismiss email about “Occupy” protests in the Bay Area: a spam filter.

According to a federal court filing Monday (Oct. 29), Jordan missed emails from city officials and a federal court monitor overseeing disciplinary actions regarding potential police brutality.

On Oct. 18, Jordan told the court that he never saw an email titled “Disciplinary Action-Occupy Oakland” sent by Robert Warshaw. The admission angered federal judge Thelton Henderson, who appointed the monitor to the position. “It was never my intention to ignore the monitor,” Jordan said in his declaration.

Upon learning of his failure to respond, Henderson ordered an investigation into why Jordan was missing important emails. The city determined that Jordan ordered his staff to put a filter out certain emails in October of last year, two days after a violent altercation between police and protesters hit the international news circuit.

Claiming that he was being flooded with anonymous emails, Jordan simply forget to remove the filter after the backlash died down.

The court proceedings are just one of the problems plaguing the police chief.  His department is also investigating claims that officers made several visits to a karaoke bar in Oakland, that allegedly doubles as a brothel. “I take these allegations very seriously, and the department opened investigations as soon as the circumstances were brought to my attention,” he said in a prepared statement.

Local news cameras staked out the location, Café Juliet, and found witnessed “women in skimpy clothing” going into the business, which is located just four blocks away from City Hall.
