A NYPD detective has been sued 28 times since 2006, costing the city close to $1 million dollars in settlement payouts alone. An independent review of lawsuits against the city’s police force revealed that a handful of officers have been sued dozens of times, thus bringing the city’s payout to over $1 million.
The New York Daily News conducted a review of lawsuits the NYPD has amassed, noting that 55 officers out of its 34,000 employees have been sued 10 or more times over the past decade thus bringing the cost to the city at around $6 million.
The top four officers named in the report, titled “NYPD’s Most Sued,” lists officers Peter Valentin, 36; Vincent Orsini, 44; Fritz Glemaud; and Warren Rohan, 43. Valentin leads the list with a whopping 28 lawsuits against him, costing the city $884,004 in payouts. Although Orsini has less lawsuits than Valentin, his payouts cost the city $1,087,502.
Many of the payouts are settlements in cases where the officers have been accused of some manner of wrongdoing such as false arrests. Valentin seems to have taken a cavalier attitude to the lawsuits, stating he doesn’t pay attention to the cases once they go to court.
However, former NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly started the Civil Lawsuit Monitoring Program and a separate Risk Assessment Unit last year after the Daily News continually reported on the lawsuit occurrences noting that the NYPD may have been letting officers run rampant. Current commissioner Bill Bratton is currently reviewing the programs, according to a NYPD spokesperson.
