Even though Denzel Washington tends to play the same kind of roles these days (it’s usually a criminal or a crooked cop, but he mixes it up sometimes) and he knows how to get people into theaters.
Washington’s latest film, The Equalizer, came in No 1 at the box office this weekend, earning $35 million earning the fourth-largest September opening in movie history. Not bad for a 59-year-old actor who already has 12 consecutive movies to open with over $20 million.
Needless to say, he’s been bankable for a long time.

Washington’s 2013 flick with Mark Walhberg brought in $131 million worldwide.
Brotherly Love
Washington’s 2003 film, Philadelphia, co-starring Tom Hanks as an AIDS patients, grossed $206 million.
Protect & Serve
A decade ag0 Washington starred in Man on Fire, based on the 1980 novel of the same name. The film made $130 million.
Waterworks
Crimson Tide, the 1995 submarine film co-starring Sean Connery and co-written by Quentin Tarantino racked up $157 million.
Under The Influence
Flight soared for Washington. His depiction of a drug and alcohol addicted pilot grossed over $161 million.
Party Of One
The Book of Eli grossed over $157 million, enough to almost double the $80 million production costs.
The Pelican Brief
Washington played a political reporter in the 1993 film The Pelican Brief, which grossed nearly $200 million. Julia Roberts starred as a law student in the silver screen adaptation of John Grisham novel.
Football Fury
Released in 200, the football film Remember the Titans, added another $136 million to Washington’s box office brawn.
Blue Magic
Washington’s depiction of New York drug lord Frank Lucas was a big hit. 2007’s American Gangster grossed a whopping $266 million.
Safety First
The 2012 film Safe House was another big get for Washington. It grossed $206 million, including $126 million in the U.S. alone.
