Hip-Hop is global now. It is enjoyed throughout multiple countries and even taught at Ivy League institutions. But is it being slowly taken away from us?

While the actual business of the music continues to suffer, the culture is being monopolized to the tune of billions of dollars each year. However very few people of color are really in power to financially gain from the all registers ringing off.

Clearly our spending habits are more powerful than we realize and some conversation needs to be had on what we do and not support.

So with that said we present 10 Hip-Hop consumer brands who are not Black owned. Did we mention that Moguldom Studios has a new documentary titled Bleaching Black Culture that details this growing problem?

1. BET

Even though it started out as Black Entertainment Television, the BET network is owned by Viacom. Viacom is owned by a company called National Amusements which is owned privately by the Redstone family.

2. Def Jam Records Originally owned by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, Rick went on to sell his portion to Rush. In 1999 Simmons sold his shares to Universal Music Group which is owned by Vivendi.

3. Jimmy Jazz

The national urban fashion chain is owned by James Kherzie, who named his first store after The Clash’s song “Jimmy Jazz”. Sidebar he also owns the Hyperactive store chain too.

4. Southpole

While Southpole is viewed as unofficial wet tissue by many fashion aficionado, they grossed over 350 million in 2005. Southpole is owned by David Khym who is Korean.

5. Against All Odds

The popular clothing retailer, who houses brands like Jordan, Sean John and AKOO, is owned by Kenny Khym who was a co-founder of Southpole.

6. Eckō unltd.

The popular urban clothing brand was 100% owned by Marc Milecofsky up until 2009. In 2013 Iconix took full ownership of the brand.

7. Complex

Complex Media was founded by Rich Antoniello. He also serves as CEO.

8. Ciroc As much as Diddy pushes the brand, he does not own Ciroc. The ultra premium vodka is owned by Diageo which is the largest producer of wine and spirits in the world.

9. Armand De Brignac Champagne

Don’t be fooled, the ownership of the infamous Ace Of Spades champagne remains with Sovereign Brands and the original Cottier family in France.

10. Supreme
