Fantastic Four director Josh Trank sent out a tweet last night in attempts to deflect the blame from the way his new superhero movie is getting creamed on by critics.
The 31-year-old’s directorial debut, 2012’s Chronicle, raked in more than $125 million at the box office but Marvel’s latest reboot seems destined for failure.
In a now-deleted tweet (more on that later), Trank wrote: “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve seen great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.” Constantin Film, Marvel Entertainment, Marv Films, TSG Entertainment and of course, 20th Century FOX could have been the implied guilty parties.
The film reunited Trank with Michael B. Jordan after the aforementioned Chronicle but The Hollywood Reporter discovered back in May that the director was actually difficult on the set for much of the shooting.
The $120 million project released today, August 7, in theaters but as advertised, the critics have been torching the entire picture. Vox in particular pulled out the chainsaw and called it “the worst superhero in 20 years.” Yes, that’s even including 1997’s nipple suit Batman & Robin, when Joel Schumacher was actually handing out refunds to eyesore viewers for a short period.
Fantastic Four may die at the box office but tweets live forever. Just ask Uproxx’s Mike Ryan.
