Yesterday, Carmelo Anthony and Jordan Brand hosted hundreds kids and teens at Cipriani on Wall Street to celebrate the launch of his new signature shoe, the Melo M9. Sway Calloway of MTV News hosted while French Montana and Fabolous performed, but more importantly the kids on hand got to try on Melo’s new shoes, take photos on a green screen and watch his new documentary in a family friendly environment.
Cipriani was outfitted with a basketball court right in the middle of the venue, in front of the stage, where kids got to shoot baskets for a chanceat winning a pair of the Melo M9 in a raffle. The venue was turned into an interactive experience thanks to the court, a screening of the Playing For The City That Made Me documentary as well as special colorways of the Melo 9 (like the “Year of the Snake” and “Black History Month” editions), and apparel, displayed throughout the building.
We asked Melo what he like most about his new shoe compared to his last, the M8. “It’s way lighter. This is the lightest shoe that I ever created, that we made,” Melo told Hip-Hop Wired. “Once you put in on your foot, you’re locked down. Sometimes you put a shoe on your foot it loosen as you play, as you sweat. This one is a total 100% lockdown. It feels like your walking on pillows out there. By far this is the best one I created.”
Anthony received raucous applause when he hit the stage and Sway moderated a discussion between NBA legend Bernard King and the New York Knicks’ current superstar. Afterwards, French Montana took the stage and performed a handful of his hits, including “Shot Caller” and “Pump That” and so did Fabolous, who ran through his own hits like “So NY” and “Breathe.”
