The Wu-Tang Clan referred to member GZA as the crew’s de facto genius for a reason. The veteran rapper and science junkie combined his love of music and education recently at New York’s Park East High School, assisting the ninth graders in writing educational rhymes.

CBS News profiled GZA, who entered the science class on the invitation of Columbia University educator Dr. Chris Emdin.  Dr. Emdin has spearheaded a new program that aims to teach via the popular music art form, hoping to connect students with scholastics in a way that relates to their love of Hip-Hop. The people who most embrace hip-hop culture are the same populations who are most disinterested in school and disinterested in science,” Emdin said to CBS.

GZA didn’t graduate from high school, but he’s since been a fixture on the education scene after embarking on an ambitious project that will serve as a teaching tool about the cosmos titled Dark Matter. The Brooklyn native explained to CBS why he’s involved and what he hopes to spark in the minds of the young. “The goal is just to awaken the children, make them more aware and embrace science and everything connected to it,” GZA explained briefly.

According the video, it appears that the students are taking to GZA and Dr. Emdin’s approach. Wu-Tang is for the children, indeed.
