In this nation of Pro-life against Pro-choice, the battle lines often skew many integral issues abound. This is especially true when the social battles involve children. The usual mode of operation would have the forward thinking “left” against the archaic “right,” usually with one side emerging as the voice of sanity and the other left looking foolish; but occasionally, there are exceptions to the rule.

One such exception involves Representative Cynthia Davis of Missouri. In the June edition of her monthly newsletter to the press, the Republican legislator expressed her opinion on social practices and agendas that she felt were causing more harm than good. Through fiery social commentary, Davis lashed out at any and everything that vexed her, with the vast majority of her venom directed at one of Missouri’s most utilized departments: The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The state bureau provides social assistance to thousands of disadvantaged children, families, and seniors, yet, Representative Davis chose to express her disdain in the deeds that the department performs.

The brunt of Davis’ frustration was directed at the Department of Health’s Summer Program, which through state assistance and federal aid provides food to countless students who partake in reduced lunch programs throughout the calendar school year. The children, numbering in the thousands, live in low-income residences. Davis, touting the benefits of hunger, questioned whether the program is “warranted.” Even going as far as calling hunger a “positive motivator.”

She also added, “Anyone under 18 can be eligible? Can’t they get a job during the summer by the time they are 16? Hunger can be a positive motivator. What is wrong with the idea of getting a job so you can get better meals? If you work for McDonald’s, they will feed you for free during your break.

Davis currently serves as the chairwoman of the Missouri House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families. I wonder how motivated she would be if she had to go to work every day starving?
