On Monday, March 24, VH1 gave the green light on the first episode of This Is Hot 97, which premiered at a screening party at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City.
The consensus amongst everyone in attendance was that nobody really knows what to expect from a Hot 97 reality television show. After all, this is another one of Mona Scott Young’s many productions. Though her shows are notoriously fueled by controversy, it was to our pleasant surprise that This Is Hot 97 is actually funny — and dare we say, innovative. It was pure entertainment, in fact, sans the chromed out wheels and big-booty vixens.
This Is Hot 97 offers viewers an inside look at the daily grind that breathes life into New York’s staple radio station, as it simultaneously follows the day-to-day rituals of radio personalities like Angie Martinez, Funk Flex, Cipha Sounds, Peter Rosenberg and more, including the ringleader behind all this, “Old Man” Ebro Darden. That said, here are nine things we learned after watching the first two episodes.

1. Ebro Agrees To Start Filming Without Telling The Crew.
Yes, the team was completely caught off guard during a meeting, dressed in their less than finest attires.
2. This Is Hot 97 Is A Non-Scripted Comedy.
It’s hilarious. Think, The Office meets Hip-Hop. And all of it is improvised.
3. Pete Rosenberg Tries To Have A Threesome.
The morning show personality tries to finagle a ménage à trois. With whom, you’ll have to wait and see.
4. Kanye West Gets Weaseled Into Being On Camera.
The self-proclaimed genius probably still doesn’t know that the cameras were rolling when he went on another one of his rants on air.
5. Rosenberg & Cipha Sounds Try To Make The Show Their Own.
For some reason, these two think they can boss the camera and radio crews around and run the show to their liking. Wait ’til Ebro catches on.
6. Maino Pitches His Own Spin-Off Before Any Ratings Come In.
Random, but true. He swings by the office to say hello and peeps that VH1 is filming. Before we know it, he’s talking ratings and girls in catsuits.
7. Funk Flex Is A Digital King.
At the expense of an army of interns made to do most of his tedious online workings (i.e. tweeting).
8. Mack Wilds Is A Video Game Maven.
The R&B sensation is skilled on TV and in front of it. Flex has Wilds clandestinely beat Angie [Martinez] at an addictive video game sucking her out of the daily grind.
9. Funk Master Flex Has A Potty-Mouthed Doll.
It’s an action figure that is modeled after the radio vet. It also says “f*ck Master Flex,” when a string is pulled. We’re not sure where this is going…
