Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is doing what no governor has dared to do since 2001 by declaring the month of April as “Confederate History Month.”

The proclamation is causing controversy in the commonwealth, with leaders of the Black community in particular.

The Legislative Black Caucus is reasonably unhappy, and released a statement saying,

“Virginia has worked hard to move beyond the very things for which Governor McDonnell seems nostalgic.”

Governor McDonnell who is a Republican counteracts those claims however with a statement of his own.

He says that this chapter in history should be “studied, understood and remembered.”

Uhhh thanks but no thanks.

“This defining chapter in Virginia’s history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians, both in the context of the time in which it took place, but also in the context of the time in which we live, and this study and remembrance takes on particular importance as the Commonwealth prepares to welcome the nation and the world to visit Virginia for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Civil War, a four-year period in which the exploration of our history can benefit all.”

YES! Let’s all remember the Confederacy and how hard they fought to keep Black people enslaved.

That’s exactly how I want to remember my April.

SMH…
