President Barack Obama has extended benefits to same sex federal employees.
These benefits include child care services, flexibility to use family leave, relocation benefits and would give domestic partners the same status as “family members” when federal appointments are made.
This includes access to credit unions and other memberships that are supplied to heterosexual federal workers.
Obama’s actions follow a memo he signed last June, which allowed same sex partners to have access to long-term care and insurance benefits.
Although Obama is authorized to allow some benefits, Obama expressed concern regarding his full power in allowing full benefits.
“While this memorandum is an important step on the path to equality, my administration continues to be prevented by existing Federal law from providing same-sex domestic partners with the full range of benefits enjoyed by heterosexual married couples.”
