Without question, 2014 was an interesting year for those of us who frequented the Internet. With Ask.com already revealing their top celebrity searches for 2014, search engine giant Google has revealed some of the magic behind their algorithms so we can see who topped Google’s 2014 year in search.

Did Kim Kardashian’s cakes really break the web? How much did international warfare, disease and commerce play a part in what we searched for? It’s entirely possible that we’re all slobs and our searches were powered by an insatiable lust for NSFW content. #10 – Ukraine

The ongoing conflict between Russia and the Ukraine over the Crimean Peninsula likely caused Ukraine to land on this list at the number 10 spot.

#9 – Frozen

Thank Idina Menzel for the fact that your toddler (or maybe even you) and by extension the rest of the country couldn’t stop singing Let It Go and searching for Frozen. The animated movie landed at the number nine spot.

#8 – Ferguson, Missouri

Ferguson, Missouri was the flashpoint for the Michael Brown killing, the lack of an indictment for former police officer Darren Wilson, and the rallying point for #BlackLivesMatter. No wonder it landed at the number eight spot.

#7 – ISIS

Also known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and Islamic State, ISIS has supplanted The Taliban in terms of international terror and rightfully claimed the number seven spot.

#6 – ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

If you were wondering why dozens of celebrities were pouring ice-filled buckets over their heads, then chalk up a win for awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease and its associated ice bucket challenge, which landed at the number six spot.

#5 – Flappy Bird

Flappy Bird was the closest thing your smartphone has seen to Super Mario Bros., but the game was temporarily gone just as soon as it arrived. It only took a moment to make an impact and land at the number five most searched for item according to Google.

#4 – Malaysian Airlines

Authorities still haven’t located Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 after the Boeing 777 disappeared in March. That powered enough Google searches to land Malaysian Airlines at the number four spot for all the wrong reasons.

#3 – Ebola

In a year where seemingly anything old was getting retroed, Ebola came back with a vengeance and caused a panic. Nothing like a potentially deadly disease and some media coverage to land you at the number three spot.

Casual soccer fans and even those with little to no interest usually hop on the global football bandwagon every four years, which explains how the World Cup landed at the number two spot.

#1 – Robin Williams

Transcendentally talented comedian and actor Robin Williams committed suicide on August 11, 2014 amid quiet struggles with Parkinson’s Disease. His death shed light on depression, alcoholism and was a horrifically sad way to become Google’s most searched item of 2014.
