Hours after completing an interview confirming his wellbeing, famed Mexican musician and singer Sergio “El Shaka” Vega was shot and killed while on his way to a performance.

Eerily, Vega spent several hours prior to his death reassuring fans that rampant rumors of his demise hours earlier were false.

According to published reports, Vega was gunned down by unknown assailants while driving his red Cadillac, according to reports. With shots to the head and chest, Vega —  had been making his way to Sinola state, where he’d been scheduled to perform — lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Vega, who is best known for a series of songs with lyrics that celebrate Mexico’s drug cartel culture, recently upped his personal security.

Although this case is sad, according to BBCit is far from the first. BBC reports, at least seven other Mexican folk performers, including Sergio Gomex of the band K-Paz de la Sierra, have been killed in the past three years, the target of rival drug barons.

As of press time, no suspects have been arrested in conjunction with the murder.
