Six Louisiana teenagers lost their lives Monday after they drowned in an 18 foot sinkhole in the Red River.

The six teens, none of whom could swim, are believed to have drowned trying to save each other.

Ranging in age from 13 to 18 they all perished while the life of one, a 14-year-old, was saved after they were successfully rescued.

A friend of the families, Marilyn Robinson, tells The Times that she watched helplessly as the children, five boys and a girl went under.

“None of us could swim. They were yelling ‘help me, help me. Somebody please help me.’ It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one.”

The teens are said to have been part of a group of family and friends that gathered for a barbecue.
