Betsy DeVos is the head of the U.S. Department of Education and has revealed how uniquely unqualified she is for the gig. In a statement, DeVos proclaimed that historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU’s) were pioneers of “school choice.”
To be clear, HBCU’s were the direct result of Blacks not being allowed to enroll in institutions of higher learning. There was no “choice” about their creation.
Nevertheless, part DeVos’ impeccably tone deaf and historically wrong statement reads:
HBCUs are real pioneers when it comes to school choice. They are living proof that when more options are provided to students, they are afforded greater access and greater quality. Their success has shown that more options help students flourish.
The press release arrived after that now infamous “listening session” with the leaders of HBCU’s. The meeting that seems like another “Hey, I had Black people in the Oval Office” photo op from President Cheeto.
There is nothing “optional” about racism necessitating the creation of separate schools, period. Either DeVos is ignorant of segregation and Jim Crow laws in this country or is willfully naive. Either way, granting her the keys to “education” in the U.S. would be hilarious if it wasn’t so scary.
Needless to say, Twitter is having a field day calling out of DeVos for her ineptitude.
