There was a time when Ashanti was the hottest singer in the game not named Beyoncé or Mary J Blige. These days the first lady of Murder Inc. finds herself touring with her old label mate Ja Rule, dropping new music and doing her acting thing.
Today the songstress dropped by The Breakfast Club to open up about why her career seemed to suddenly fizzle out, the guest appearances on records that never were, and if the everyday UPS driver has a chance to wife her up.
Here are the 9 things we learned from Ashanti on The Breakfast Club.
1. Career Killer?
Ashanti feels that the federal indictment of her then label Murda Inc. left a sort of dark cloud on not only her career but her brand in general for a hot minute. She’s glad to say things have been on the up and up as of late.
2. Ja Rule
Ashanti says that she and Ja Rule are closer now than they ever were in Murda Inc’s heyday.
3. Indecent Proposal
Ashanti says that a “super producer” who shall remain nameless offered her all kinds of free things if she went out with him. After she turned him down he began asking for 40K for his services. Luckily her “big brothers” handled that situation.
4. Rain Fail
During one of her performances a guy threw money on the stage like she was a stripper. She was upset because she doesn’t like anyone throwing anything on her stage and says it could be a hazard for her dancers because they could’ve slipped.
5. Credit Is Due
Ashanti says she wrote “Ain’t It Funny” for Jennifer Lopez but never got her writing credit because she was knew. She did get that cash for it though.
6. Missed Appearances
Ashanti confirms that she was originally on Fabolous’ “So Into You” but apparently Irv took her off it. Another lost gem was that Jay-Z was going to be on “Foolish” but Irv decided it was better if Ashanti did the entire song by herself so he called Jay and told him to forget it. Dammit, Irv!!
7. Average Joe
When it comes to her love life she says the average dude does have a chance but anyone who isn’t in the industry would probably have a problem with her late night work schedule and the men around her during those hours.
8. Nelly
Her thoughts on Nelly’s rape accusation: “Say less.” She doesn’t want to say anything that people would take and run with.
9. Award Winner
Unbeknownst to many Ashanti won the Breckenridge Festival Best Actress award for her role in the independent film, Stuck. Good for her!
