Geoffrey Canada Reportedly First Choice for NYC Public School Chancellor

Geoffrey Canada, head of the Harlem Children’s Zone, was the first choice to become Chancellor of the New York City Public Schools, but turned the offer down, according to reports.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly reached out to Canada before choosing controversial pick, Cathleen Black. Black who has 40-years of experience in fields that don’t involve education was reportedly chosen by Bloomberg without a public search.

The choice was met with skepticism and opposition from City Council members and some parent groups, who argued that the system needed an experienced educator. Some don’t believe Black has the experience to maintain the nation’s largest school system.

Canada, 58, holds a master’s degree from Harvard and is known for championing the cause of educating children from urban communities.

He has been president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone in Harlem, New York, an organization whose goal is to increase high school and college graduation rates among students in Harlem, for 20 years.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of The After-School Corporation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for all students.
