Congo Colonel Gets 20 Years After Rape Trial

Lt. Col. Mutuare Daniel Kibibi was accused of ordering his troops on New Year’s Day to attack the village of Fizi, a community 20 miles south of Baraka.

Military prosecutor Col. Laurent Mutata Luaba said the men “behaved like wild beasts,” terrorizing defenseless civilians they were supposed to be protecting.

62 women were treated for rape and one testified that Kibibi raped her for 40 minutes.

This was the first time a commanding officer was tried for rape in the Central African country as nearly 50 women gave their detailed accounts about the ordeals they endured for the prosecutors.

The married 46-year-old colonel is a father of eight.

He is sentenced to 20 years in prison for four counts of crime against humanity.

The Washington Times recently did a piece on the onslaught of rape in Congo, check it out below.
