It’s pretty safe to say since its big reveal back in December last year, Mortal Kombat 11 is one of if not the most anticipated game of 2019. Today during the games reveal event in Los Angeles we learned even more about the 11th game in the iconic video game franchise.
We are still a ways away from Mortal Kombat 11’s April 23 launch on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC but today’s reveal event gave us a healthy idea of what to look forward to when the game finally arrives. Guests and fans streaming all over the world got a glimpse of Mortal Kombat 11’s new game engine in action, new characters, the story, character customization and more.
Here is what we learned from after watching the reveal event.
The New Graphics Engine
If you thought Mortal Kombat X was the ceiling for the franchise graphically, you were dead wrong. After viewing Mortal Kombat 11’s reveal trailer, it’s clear that the vicious fades, bone-crushing action, level design, and character detail takes the game to another level. Thanks to the improvements in graphics and gameplay we can now customize the characters more than ever before down to the slightest detail like changing Scorpion’s spear.
With Mortal Kombat 11 the goal is to make the player feel as if they are in the arena up close experiencing the action in real life. Based on the gameplay reveal trailer below mission accomplished.
The Fatalities Are Even More Gruesome
The one sole reason Mortal Kombat fans love the game so much is the iconic fatalities. You would think Ed Boon and the rest of the folks at Netherealm Studios would have run out ways their characters could viciously destroy their opponents when the words FINISH HIM pop up on the screen. Well, we are happy to report they have not and indeed have taken the gruesome acts to heights not seen before in other MK games.
Boon shared a video montage showing off some of the character fatalities from Mortal Kombat favorites such as Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Baraka, Dark Raiden, and Skarlet. Trust us when we say its a face ripping, body dismembering, brain-eating good time.
Ronda Rousey Will Be The Voice of Sonya Blade
Ronda Rousey might be done with the UFC for now, but she is still busy. The former UFC champion, Olympic medalist and now WWE superstar is bringing her star power to Mortal Kombat 11. Making the announcement herself at the event she revealed that she will be the voice behind the iconic character Sonya Blade.
“I’ve been a lifelong Mortal Kombat fan, and Sonya Blade was the first kick-ass, female video game character that I related to,” said Ronda Rousey. “Now I get to voice her in Mortal Kombat 11. It’s a dream come true to be a part of the Mortal Kombat franchise that I grew up playing.”
Rousey’s addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise looks like a perfect fit.
Mortal Kombat 11’s Story So Far
Time will be a significant factor in Mortal Kombat 11’s story mode which will be following the events of Mortal Kombat 9. Ed Boon describes it as a “time-bending narrative” that in an interesting twist introduce “situations where old characters can meet their younger selves.” But a huge first for the MK franchise will be its boss Kronika, a female antagonist who is described as The Keeper of Time and creator of existence.
She is on a mission to “bring order to the universe through any means necessary,” and that means stopping Raiden who in the trailer below upsets the balance of history once again by defeating Shinnok. With time as her weapon of choice taking her down will be no easy task.
Eight Characters Confirmed So Far
When the game launches we now know the eight combatants that players will be able to choose from. Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Skarlet, Baraka, Shao Khan (pre-order bonus) and newcomer Geras. In a trailer, fans got a look at the new character in action described as Kronika’s loyal servant.
Like his master, he too can manipulate and use it as a weapon to defeat his opponents. He can also control sand making objects to break his opposition. You can watch Geras issue fades in the trailer below, we can tell right off the bat he is going to be a new favorite among the MK community.
