Cleveland Newspaper Compares Black Female State Senator To Aunt Jemima
A cartoon depicting State Senator Nina Turner of Ohio in an Jemima-esque light has gotten Cleveland's black newspaper the Call & Post in hot water.
The move comes after Turner became the only Black elected official to support the controversial county government reform, to be accomplished via “Issue 6.”
Many of the senators supporters claim that the caricature is highly disrespectful, citing its ties to the history of racial stereotypes and bigotry of the early 20th century.
Issue 6 will allow for an entire overhaul of Cleveland's county government. Naturally, most Black business owners and residents fear that the change will significantly reduce, if not completely do away with, minority political power wielded in the city.
