28 year old British resident Lyndsey Scott passed away after unknowingly receiving a lung transplant from a smoker. Scott was a sufferer of cystic fibrosis and received the transplant in February 2009. The donor had been a smoker for over 30 years and . She passed away in July of 2009.
Chris Rudge, Britain’s top transplant official defended the decision and claimed that patients should be aware that they are not getting a brand new transplant. He also said on the BBC that “lungs from a smoker can be working perfectly normally.”
Scott’s family called for patients to be told more information about organ donors before accepting a transplant.
