Jay-Z Sends Shots To LL Cool J & His "So Called Longevity"

Jay-Z takes shots at LL Cool J saying that competing at his level, at his age is “rarefied air” in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine

Jay-Z also acknowledges the fact that the path that his career has taken is not the usual for most rappers—if any.

I guess when you are on top of the rap game, 40 years old, and bored you have nothing better to do than start beef with other 40 year olds?

“We’ve seen people like LL Cool J have longevity and we respect the heritage of what he’s done but it’s not like right now he’s competing on the same level as Lil’ Wayne so for me to still be able to compete at that level at my age, that’s rarefied air, it’s never been done.”

Jay-Z feels that the real way to stay in the game is to stay true to who you are as a rapper and not try to make “young songs.”

“I think the problem with people, as they start to mature, they say, ‘Rap is a young man’s game,’ and they keep trying to make young songs. But you don’t know the slang — it changes every day. You can visit the topic, but these young kids live it every day, and you’re just visiting. So you’re trying to be something you’re not, and the audience doesn’t buy into that. And people wonder why [they're not selling]. ‘I made a great Southern bounce song!’ You’re from New York, and you’re 70! Why are you bouncing?”

Jay-Z seems like he is setting himself up to have a rap career well into the foreseeable future and if that means taking out former rap legends like LL Cool J in the process, so be it!

It also looks like LL may have struck a nerve a couple of years back and Jay may still have salt in his wounds.  Speaking truthfully, LL once stated that just because you’re the best baker doesn’t mean you know how to run a bakery…

And judging from Jigga’s success as a label head, LL may have been right.

I like Jay as an artist, business man not soooo much..blame it on how he Shyteted on Dame and Biggs..but anyway..he wouldnt be half of what he is today had it not been for artists like LL and Will Smith, they are infamous for their out of hiphop business indeavors and Jay is taking over where Dame left things at! Rocawear, Armedale, Rocafella,Prokeds, all were Dames moves Jay was just the face..erybody knows that!

On many levels what Jay Z is saying is correct rap is a young man’s game but give LL Cool J some slack hey he got a wife and five kids to feed cloth and house I wouldn’t be surprised if he played the trombone and did the hambone to make some money!

It is all crap. bring back the 70’s artisits and songs like blue magic, the dells , the delfonics, black ivory and the original huse music with the dj spin by larry levan , That was music. Not this foolish east coast west coast beef, where women are and objectify themselves and the male artists are questionable at best.

Spitting shots and spitting the truth are two different things. Stop trying to make it seem more than it really is. Jay-Z spoke the truth. He didn’t mean any disrespect. They are both legends, although different kinds of legends of Hip Hop.

Slow your row PawPaw…..You can’t take away from what’s already been done……Just because you want to stay relevant, and all up in our face wit cha eye candy. Does not mean everybody should do the same…..LL is LEGENDARY!
And, “HE’S ON TO THE NEXT ONE!!!” Get on his level, or are you afraid you will be a failure within the unknown?

I’m reading some of these comments and as far as relevancy goes, LL’s time has come and gone and now its Jay-Z’s time (with what little time he has left) but Jay should acknowledge that when LL was on top we was wishin he could break into the rap game. LL has solidified his place in hip-hop history with others that came before you Jay, so pay respect where its due. It doesn’t matter if LL is rapping anymore he still collects royalities and he expanded his market by diversifying himself THE SAME THING YOU’RE TRYING TO DO NOW if you say rap is a young man’s game you’re practically an old head rapping at 40 and it’ll be sad to see a 50 year old man rapping…you’ll make your place in the history but don’t knock the ones who wrote the book. That’s all I gotta say.

The only legend in this article is LL Cool J …He is a living legend! Jay Z had the Blueprint LL is the Blueprint! He was the first solo artist to cross over to mainstream success. This Man had legends that would open for “his” concerts. Artists like Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy and Whodini. LL Cool J, Greatest Of All Time!!!

I agree LL cool j is the greatest of all time because this entertainment business is about advertisment and LL cool j is very advertised that makes him number 1 so jayz is not ready for LL cool j yeat mean he is not on LL cool j level. Jayz need to slow his rope and check yo self before LL cool j put s you in your place. p.s All Jayz is good for right now is rap. You work it out for your self and see what iam saying. Daniel.

This is not wisdom at all, We all belong to the same world, i believe that when you feel inside your heart real love for what you like , or dream or wish to do and you put your heart, soul, talent and mind all you need lef is courage, voice and life not age,,…Our skin is just a shell heart, spirit and soul never get old….

LL is legendary, no doubt. But let’s be real, he IS irrelevant at the moment. And for the record, he’s the one who issued the first shot. Personally, I like them both and that’s the great thing about music. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion, but I don’t see how you can say that one is better than the other – they’re different. Don’t fool yourselves LL’s is also the most arrogant rapper in the history of rap. They’re all arrogant! That’s just the way it is. LL’s feelings got hurt and he started dissing Jay.

Jay Z doesnt compare because he’s been in the game half as long.LL was also platinum at the 15 year mark as. Thing is LL continued to spit fire, even after radio stations stopped playing his records. If Jay Z reaches LL’s level by staying in the game when he’s no longer the “IT” dude in hip hop, and can account for a 30 year career, he can lay claim to the Title of GOAT, beause then he would have not only sold more records, but also matched LL in longevity. Right now he’s just tofu, LL’s the real GOAT

No thanks
