White Man Shoots Black Hurricane Katrina Victims to Keep “Outsiders” Out of Neighborhood

A Mississippi man has been arrested and charged with shooting and wounding three men in what prosecutors said was a racially motivated attack in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.

According to published reports, Roland Bourgeois Jr., a white man, is charged in a five-count indictment with firing a shotgun at three Black men in New Orleans's historic Algiers Point neighborhood while they tried to leave the center of the city during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The victims who were 17, 18 and 32 at the time, have been identified as Marcel Alexander, Chris Collins andDonnell Herrington-who was shot in the throat but survived.

Authorities report that Bourgeois and others discussed shooting black people and defending the neighborhood from "outsiders" after the storm and allegedly warned a black resident of Algiers Point that "anything coming up this street darker than a brown paper bag is getting shot."

In addition to threatening current black residents, it is alleged that Bourgeois bragged that he "got one” after the shooting and then retrieved a bloody baseball cap belonging to the victim as proof.

According to the indictment, "When (Bourgeois) was advised that the man he had shot was still alive, he referred to the injured man using a racial epithet and threatened he would kill him."

Bourgeois, who is now a resident of Mississippi, has been charged with committing a hate crime with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

Although Bourgeois has been indicted, a date for his initial court appearance wasn't immediately set and he is not in custody.

Authorities state that the reason for Bourgeois' lack of confinement is in part because he is apparently "in very poor health" and wasn't considered "a danger or a risk of flight."

The case against Bourgeois is one of several post-Katrina investigations opened by the Justice Department's civil rights division.

On Tuesday, six current and former New Orleans police officers were indicted on federal civil rights charges stemming from deadly shootings on the Danziger Bridge on Sept. 4, 2005.

Five former officers already have pleaded guilty to participating in a cover-up to make it appear the shootings were justified.

    lots of people use the katrina hurricane to commit crimes against innocent people, what about all the murders and other crimes that was not bought out in the open. Sick or ill health or what, this man should pay. He wasn't too sick to commit this crime, so why is he too sick now to be in prison, dont use his illness as an excuse, he commit the crime, now pay for it.

    This is why I always laugh when ppl say racism is dead. I was watching "What Would You Do?" the other night. 3 White kids were vandalising a car in public, but only 1 man called 911. But at the same time this was going on a white man called 911 twice because he saw 2 black teens asleep in a car because he thought they was trying to rob someone. WTF??? When the 3 white kids got replaced by 3 black kids, 10 ppl called 911 on them. Now isn't that something.

    To me, this story indicates the low level of mentality and intelligence in so much of our population. Two things are happening with this man: Lack of rational thought for the consequences of his actions, both for his victims and himself, death, jail, etc.) and underlying fear. Guarding his home was a no-brainer but shooting and then bragging is a no-brain. I am white and on an individual basis I have known and still know a number of black people that I would do anything for and vice versa. The problem lies in the criminal element that seems to follow decent black people into a so-called decent white area. My black neighbors are great; the black men who have been coming in from a neighboring town and robbing people and homes in broad daylight (they have been caught, so it is no guess) are the ones who make some of us nervous. Gangs of young black guys wandering around with their "pants on the ground" and doo rags on their heads,well it makes us afraid of them and usually with good reason. It's the human condition and there is no easy answer. In the meantime the perp in this story needs to get his just desserts and the sooner the better.

    I know that racisim is every where, not just whites hating blacks, we as a whole say that we love God, and can't seem to love the people around us, this man has a problem, and i believe that he should be held responsible for his actions, throw the book at him, but the thing that we don't even realize is that his health has failed and that in it self is punishment for what he has done. he might not die from his health problems, but he will reep what he has sown. i just hopes that repents before he dies for his souls sake. yes iam black, i choose to for give, the hate has to stop some where, i guess it can start with me.

    This is not an all white people thing, there are white people who are mean and do things against white and black and black people who do mean things to white people and black people. This is an incident and the media wants to divide us so we hate each other, then big government can control us all folks. (Our government controls our media currently).     Let's just face it people, blacks and hispanics are the most hated ethnic groups. It's sad. They show on the news the bad seeds in the black and latino communities, never the good people of our communities. So if that is what you see everyday then naturally you are going to feel a hatred towards a particular people. In reality white people commit just as more crimes as other races.
