Brawl Interrupts DMV Awards, Wale Responds
Fight Breaks Out At DMV Hip-Hop Honors Ceremony
Massive brawls between rivaling factions ended what was to be a ceremonious moment mid-east coast hip hop.
Over 1,500 people reportedly were in attendance at the Hyatt Regency at Crystal City to celebrate progression of hip hop in the DMV area, at the DMV Hip Hop Awards on Saturday (March 5). But the main event happened to be an all out, chair throwing brawl that halted the festivities.
During an intermission, a fight broke out that involved dozens of people, lasting for minutes, causing a number of injuries.
"It was in this spirit that the DMV Music Awards were created five years ago, and in this spirit, the 'DMV' will continue to move forward in the efforts to share great work with the worldwide community of music fans," organizers of the event said in a statement.
D.C. rapper Wale recently took to his Twitter account to express his distaste with the events that went down.
“Just heard about the DMV awards," the newly singed Maybach Music Group artist tweeted. "DC hiphop took major steps last year…And now this. WE gotta do better."
Five people were injured during the melee. Police have yet to make an arrest, but an investigation in ongoing.
