Trayvon Martin Case Inspires Black On White Hate Crime In Chicago
A pair of African-American Chicago teenagers are embroiled in a bizarre assault case, beating a 19-year old white man last Tuesday (April 17), in retaliation for the killing of Trayvon Martin. The two assaulted the man by pointing a tree branch at him, beating him, and attempting a robbery, before they were apprehended by police after running off. One of the teens has come forward, admitting his crime was motivated by the explosive and racially charged Martin case, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
Alton L. Hayes, III, 18, told police that he was upset over Martin's death, and beat the man because he was white, according court records. Hayes and an unnamed 15-year old walked up to the victim, pinning his arms to the side. Hayes reportedly picked up a large tree branch, threatening the victim by saying, "Empty your pockets, white boy." They then flung the man to the ground, went through his pockets and began beating him before fleeing the scene.
Hayes was charged with a hate crime, attempted robbery, and aggravated battery, all considered felonies. His bail was set at $80,000 and was still in jail as of this past Friday. The 15-year old was handed over to the juvenile courts.
