Washington National Cathedral To Unveil Rosa Parks Statue

The Washington National Cathedral is set to immortalize the legacy of Rosa Parks by dedicating a statue to the civil rights pioneer, to be unveiled Thursday (May 10). The statue will be placed in the section of the church dedicated to human rights. Parks, who passed away in 2005, will join the likes of other noted human rights figures including former Eleanor Roosevelt.

Rhea McCauley, one of Parks’ nieces, will attend the ceremony along with Elaine Eason Steele, co-founder of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development.  The organization was founded in 1987 by Steel and Parks in commemoration of her husband, Raymond.

Parks became famous in 1955 ,after her refusal to get up from her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Ala. helped to kick-start the Civil Rights Movement and the fight to end segregation. Over the years, Parks worked closely with other historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr., whose memory was honored in 2010, via a statue on the D.C. National Mall.
