A NYPD officer shot and killed an unarmed 23-year-old Brooklyn woman Thursday (June 14) evening, after a short police pursuit. Shantel Davis, was driving a stolen vehicle when she was pulled over by police for running three red lights, in the Flatbush section of the borough.

As they approached the vehicle, Davis failed at her attempt to jump out the passenger door, before trying to get away by driving in reverse. She also collided with a minivan, hit an officer with the car door, and reportedly begged not to be killed— while refusing to be pulled out of the car.

Forty four year-old Officer Phillip Atkins, a 12-year veteran on the force, fired the fatal shot to Davis’ chest. Atkins has been placed on paid administrative leave, while the department has yet to determine if he meant to pull the trigger.

Although Davis had an extensive criminal past, local politicians and witnesses argue that the officer intentionally used excessive force. Davis’ story comes one day after another NYPD officer pleaded not-guilty to manslaughter for shooting 18-year-old Ramarley Graham, of the Bronx.
