African College Student Shot Dead In Bronx Gas Station Robbery [PHOTO]

Lamin Sillah was met with a tragic end to a life of promise. The Gambia native was an accounting student, who worked the night shift at a Bronx gas station, to make money to send back to his family in Africa. He was shot at point blank range during a robbery, Tuesday (Sept, 4) night.

The 28-year-old sustained a fatal wound to the  torso, during the robbery. The assailant was one of two suspects that rode bikes to the RC Petroleum station at 9:40 p.m. After robbing an outside attended for $30, one of the thieves entered the store and went inside the booth behind the counter to get more money. Surveillance video shows the suspect pointing his gun directly at Sillah, who was scheduled to end his shift 20-minutes later.

“He was a hardworking boy who loved his education,” said his uncle, Ebou Cham. “He wanted to be the very best accountant.”

After shooting Sillah, the suspect rifled through his pockets. “There’s a struggle. He shoots him. [Sillah] falls down,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. “He shoots him again. He goes through his pockets, drags the body out of the office.”

Although the homicide rate in New York City is down for the year, gun violence in the area continues to be an issue.  An ex-Marine turned grocery store worker in New Jersey recently killed two co-workers before turning the gun on himself; one week prior to that incident a disgruntled former employee killed his boss outside the Empire State Building.

The summer has also seen the deaths of several other innocent victims, including 4-year-old Lloyd Morgan who was shot in the head while on the playground.

Police have yet to find Sillah’s shooter but released a surveillance sketch, which can be found below.
