Nicki Minaj is known for making funny faces, and spitting silly rhymes from time to time, but every once in a while she gives us a peek into her heart. On the previously unreleased track “Letter to Lil Wayne,” the Harajuku Barbie gets extra personal about her Young Money boss.
Pondering why she hasn’t been signed yet, Minaj starts out by humbling herself. “As a fan man I really am proud of you,” she raps. “Second of all I gotta say thanks, you really did a lot for my out of state bank/With that being said, let’s get down to the real, still don’t understand what went down with the deal.”
From there the 29-year-old expresses her motivation for getting into the rap game. “I do it for the girls that be flippin’ the bird, tryna get up out the hood and get into the burbs/But everything you said was it just pretend?/Maybe it was all a game, like ESPN/ I don’t really care if they hate on you, I be turning down meetings just to wait on you.”
Of course we all know how the story ends: Minaj was signed to Young Money and went on to become one of the biggest female rappers in the game, landed a judging gig on American Idol, and has plans to re-release Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.
Either way, it’s nice to hear her showcase a different side of herself.
