Hip-Hop fans the world over were undoubtedly stoked that famed Mount Vernon, NY duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth set aside their differences a couple of years back. This summer marked the 20th anniversary of their debut LP, Mecca And The Soul Brother, and fans have been waiting since 1994 for a followup. Although a new record from the pair is in the works, CL Smooth is preparing to drop a sophomore project The Emancipation of Corey Penn.
The first single from the record, “Ask About Me,” dropped earlier this afternoon. The funky horn-laced track from producer Kenny Ali II is set at the proper pace for CL's carefully measured bars, with a DJ scratching Cassidy's vocals from the “I'm A Hustla” track which makes up the title and hook of the song.
“How I get that hood love is magical/But how I get my respect is international/Heard I chef good food and I blow scama/And walk these streets like a godfather,” raps CL in an understated fashion. Essentially a platform to talk his ish, CL Smooth gives a little history to new jacks who may not be familiar with his resume.
Both the Chocolate Boy Wonder and the Mecca Don have gone on to flourish as soloists after initially splitting in 1995. Last year while on tour in London, Pete Rock promised an official record would be coming soon and they've been spending time together as of late. Pete Rock & CL Smooth will be doing a run of dates later this month in London and have been touring around the world since their official reunion in 2010.
There has not been an official release date announced for The Emancipation Of Corey Penn.
