People In Harlem React To Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” Meme [VIDEO]
You probably already knew this, but the “Harlem Shake” meme is not the real “Harlem Shake.” The former, videos of groups of people dancing to producer Baauer’s “Harlem Shake,” is not the latter, a dance popularized in the early 2000’s after G-Dep’s “Let’s Get It” video. A filmmaker took to Harlem’s streets to seek opinions on the current “Harlem Shake” craze (or annoyance) and the results are hilarious.
After setting up just steps from the famed Apollo Theater, Chris McGuire asked uptown residents to give their opinions and the responses were candid, to say the least. Some of the best comments include:
“That’s weird, that’s weird.”
“I feel like this is really violation towards Harlem and anybody that’s in Harlem.”
“It’s just the shake, but it ain’t the Harlem shake.”
“That’s not the shake b…ohh, no good.”
“They’re dry humping air.”
“The look like they just smoke some dust.”
“Do you see people around here doing that crap?”
“That represents Jersey, California…that’s not Harlem.”
“Y’all need to stop that sh-t, like come on man.”
“Do you know the history of Harlem?”
“It started in Harlem, but not that sh-t they doing.”
Watch the full video, which includes some demonstrations of the OG Harlem Shake, below. We do ask that you refrain from performing the genuine Harlem Shake if you are over the age of 18, though. Just saying.
