For most of us, when we to prepare to enter the workforce we polish and refine our resumes until they’re perfect. However, sometimes social norms don’t apply to artists and outliers; Jean Michel Basquiat is no exception. The late artist’s hand-written resume recently on exhibition has sold for $50,000.
As part of the ‘Man Made’ Exhibition, the untitled two-page document details all of the young artist’s accomplishments. Given the fact that ‘SAMO’ wrote his resume when he was 20 years-old, it sheds insight as to why its so thin. The resume appears to be more of an art piece than a professional document. Gracing the pages are his stylized penmanship reminiscent of his graffiti background.
It contains information on his scant education, his published interviews and a lengthy list of references that includes luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Tennessee Williams. One wonders if Basquiat was serious in using this resume or if it was done as a joke for his friends. Whatever the case, it has paid major dividends.
