Protestors hit the streets of New York City in heavily tourist areas likes Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Union Square Tuesday (Dec. 3), after a grand jury’s decision not to indict an NYPD officer in the choking death of Staten Island resident Eric Garner.
Almost immediately after the decision was announced, demonstrators began mobilizing on social media, and taking their feelings to the streets. Several people participated in a “die-in” at Grand Central Station, one of the busier traveling hubs in the city. Demonstrators have also taken to the Staten Island location of Garner’s fatal run-in with police.
Several are demanding that the annual tree lighting ceremony to be shut down, and some plan to take action to disrupt the event, which is scheduled to be broadcast on television.
At press time, the reported protests have been peaceful.
