Michelle Obama was criticized for not covering hear head during a trip to Saudi Arabia this week with President Obama to pay their respects to the late King Abdullah. The first lady’s break away from custom upset a number of Saudi’s voicing their disapproval on Twitter.
Saudi television blurred Mrs. Obama’s image because her head wasn’t covered.
Reports the UK Telegraph:
Hundreds of Saudis took to Twitter using hashtags translating to “#Michelle_Obama_Immodest” and “#Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled” to voice their disapproval of her decision not to observe Saudi customs.
According to the Washington Post, more than 1,500 tweets were written on Tuesday using the hashtag, most expressing their disapproval.
Some pointed out that the First Lady had worn a headscarf on a visit to Indonesia, another predominantly Muslim country, in 2010.
The Queen wore a headscarf on her visit to the Gulf in 1979, while the Duchess of Cornwall wore a headscarf outdoors and then lowered it round her neck indoors during her visit to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi women are required to cover their heads in public, although foreign visitors are not required to abide by the practice.
In her defense, Mrs. Obama abided by the modest clothing dress code, and she isn’t the first person in the White House to not cover up . Laura Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and Hillary Clinton all went unveiled in the country.
