The legendary Roots crew continue to create memorable music whether the Rap community listens or not. Questlove and Black Thought talked about this and more during their recent visit to The Breakfast Club.

As the band ramped up the promo towards the release of their new album, titled …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, their focus remains on expanding the brand.

DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God posed some interesting questions regarding their impressive catalog, collaborating with other artists, Jimmy Fallon, Soul Train and more.

So we present the top 8 things we learned from The Breakfast Club Roots interview. Hearing Questlove’s answer about Prince’s security staff was hilarious to us; let us know what you found most interesting in the comments section below.

The Elevator

Questlove has no idea what went down in the infamous Jay Z versus Solange fight in the elevator and could care less about it. Loyalty is royalty folks.

Philadelphia

While Meek Mill vows that leaving Philly is mandatory for Philly artists to be successful, The Roots see it differently. They go global but remain local at heart.

Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

While the show affords them a different kind of branding, they don’t take that as a pass to crossover and make pop records. Also the television checks are husky enough to balance out the money they used to get on tour.

Jamming

As we all know their famed jam sessions have produced some amazing material. Questlove admits some performers have no chill when it comes to stopping, so it puts the group in a funny spot in terms of shutting people down so things may proceed accordingly.

The Artist

Questlove is close friends with Prince and says the artist is very regular even though public perception portrays him as this mythical being.

Bars

Early on Questlove did rap but he was wise enough to put the microphone down for good.

The Crew

While the members are releasing their 11th studio effort, the crew goes through war in deciding the direction of each album. It is to the point where Questlove has quit the band on each album except the last three.

Acting

Black Thought will have a role in the James Brown biopic Get On Up.
