Each one of Don Lemon’s foot-in-mouth moments on-air brings the CNN anchor one step closer to being more of a talking head than the guests trotted out on the network.
Few put the “basic” in basic cable news quite like Lemon with his penchant for self-aggrandizing, inaccurate and sometimes just childish behavior. Whether it’s oversimplifying issues of discrimination and class warfare, or trotting out a seriously flawed argument about crime and discrimination, Lemon seems to repeatedly cross the line separating bad journalism and being irresponsible. Take a look at some of his most egregious moments and see if you agree.

Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is an actual, living, breathing human being. Nicholas Brody is a fictional character on the Showtime series Homeland. Presumably, a news anchor like Don Lemon should know the difference, yet he asked Homeland producer Gideon Raff the about similarities between the two anyway, basically accusing Bergdahl of being a domestic terrorist.
The smallest black hole would suck in our entire planet Earth. So why would Don Lemon entertain a crackpot theory from Twitter about such a black hole being responsible for the disappearance of Flight 370? No, no it’s cool. We’ll wait.
Tensions ran high during the first few days of protest following Michael Brown’s killing in Ferguson, Missouri. In an exchange that seemed completely unprofessional, Lemon ended up in an uncomfortable shouting match with Talib Kweli. We expected that from Fox News but not CNN.
In another gem from his on the ground coverage in Ferguson, it appeared Lemon didn’t know the difference between an automatic weapon and a semiautomatic one.
Most were riding with Don Lemon when he called B.S. on pundits trying to equivocate black on black crime and members of law enforcement getting a pass to kill unarmed minorities with no repercussions. But then he listed sagging pants, use of the “N-word,” littering, dropping out of school, and having children out of wedlock as the five biggest plagues in the black community. Not for nothing, but he also agreed with Bill O’Reilly.
Don Lemon’s latest crime against real journalism and common sense came when he told a woman accusing Bill Cosby of raping her that she could have shut down the situation by biting his penis. Way to be sensitive, Don. It also totally ignores the fact that many of the women making allegations against Cosby claimed to be drugged. And, oh yeah, you don’t blame rape victims.
Circling back to that famous six-letter word that starts with the letter N, Don Lemon said people like Justin Bieber would be less inclined to use the slur if they weren’t encouraged by blacks who use it’s similarly sounding five-letter cousin.
The hits just keep on coming. After the initial details of the Adrian Peterson case were made public, Don Lemon compared corporal punishment of a child (you know a human being) to disciplining an animal such as a common, domestic dog. Marinate on that one for a minute.
In another epic moment of insensitivity and just plain stupidity, Lemon took a potentially educational moment with Chaz Bono and other members of the transgender community into an opportunity to start asking dumb questions like, “Is it cool to have facial hair?”
With larger social issues looming, Don Lemon used his platform on Twitter to throw a tantrum about actor Jonah Hill allegedly curving him as the pair bumped into each other in public.
Larry Fishburne is about the same complexion as Don Lemon and has a full head of hair. Samuel L. Jackson is several shades darker and is usually bald when not in character for a movie. Those are two facts generally not up for debate in the white or black communities, but Lemon felt the need to back a news anchor who mistook Fishburne for Jackson because apparently that’s what Don Lemon does.
Again, Don Lemon began trending for all the wrong reasons when he reduced the NYPD’s “Stop and Frisk” policy to a false dichotomy of “Would you rather be politically correct or safe and alive?” Just like that, the hashtag #DonLemonOn was born.
