One of the pleasant, early T.V. successes of 2015 has been Larry Wilmore’s The Nightly Show with its “Keep It 100” segment. Guests are encouraged to keep it 100% honest with the incentive of either a “Keep It 100” emoji sticker or some audience boos and bags of “weak tea.”

If only the real world had stakes that low. When keeping it 100 backfires, these celebrities found themselves fired, fined, or in the middle of public relations nightmares. Keep reading, and see why sometimes it’s better to keep it 75 and stay employed.

Watch The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore weeknights at 11:30/10:30c on Comedy Central or on the Comedy Central app. #KeepIt100

Talib Kweli and Don Lemon

It’s hard to tell if this was a case of Don Lemon’s reputation being overblown, legit disrespect, or just the result of two brothers being in Ferguson during a tense time. Nevertheless, it sure felt like Don Lemon was about to catch a fade on live television.

Stephen A Smith’s Ray Rice Quote

In a press conference, Janay Rice sounded like she was apologizing for provoking being punched by her fiancée, which also sounds kind of ludicrous. Stephen A. Smith insinuated the same thing on ESPN’s First Take and found himself suspended and apologizing.

Kanye Interrupts Taylor Swift

“Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” really was a lot better than whatever Taylor Swift got that MTV VMA for in 2009. Blame the Hennessy for Kanye keeping it 100 and trying to bumrush America’s sweetheart without expecting consequences.

Rob Parker’s RGIII Slander

Another First Take gem found Rob Parker calling NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III a “cornball brother” because Griffin was allegedly a Republican in an interracial relationship. Rob Parker found himself no longer working for ESPN.

Bill Simmons

Bill Simmons Disses Roger Goodell

The Ray Rice scandal was so controversial that it took out two ESPN employees. Grandland EIC, Bill Simmons, repeatedly called NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a liar on his BS Report podcast after Goodell claimed to have not seen footage of Rice punching his fiancée. Simmons got a three-week suspension.

Samantha Power

Samatha Power Shades Hillary Clinton

Barack Obama was rocking with Samantha Power as a foreign policy adviser during his 2008 Presidential campaign. But Power slipped up and got quoted shading fellow Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. In order to deflect that heat, Power had to take an L and resign from the campaign.

Phylicia Rashad

Phylicia Rashad Defends Bill Cosby

After decades, we know Phylicia Rashad is on Team Bill Cosby. But she was quoted as saying, “forget those women” in regards to the 30-plus women who alleged Bill Cosby sexually assaulted them. After dying a thousand deaths on Twitter, she probably wishes she didn’t keep it 100.

Peter Rosenberg

Peter Rosenberg Disses Nicki Minaj

Candid opinion turned to disrespect when Funkmaster Flex and Peter Rosenberg revealed their real feelings about Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Starships.” In return, Nicki politely skipped out on Hot 97’s 2012 Summer Jam. Sometimes, you just have to shut up and play the records.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

Kanye West’s “Pet Names” For Kim K

At various times, Kanye West has called his wife and the mother of his child a “Trophy Wife,” someone who became “a superstar all from a home movie,” and someone who “dated broke black dudes.” Sigh. Someday, North West is going to be on the Internet reading about how daddy kept it 100 when talking about mommy.

Macklemore

Macklemore Shares His Texts

There’s all kinds of unwritten rules about keeping private communications private, and Macklemore violated when he Instagrammed his text message apology to Kendrick Lamar for winning the Best Rap Album GRAMMY.

Donald Sterling

Donald Sterling’s Racist Rants

Billionaire, 80-year-olds with dementia and trifling side-pieces saying racist things isn’t particularly surprising. It’s even less surprising when they have a history of such behavior. Somehow, Donald Sterling kept it 100 and made more billions. Only in America.

Kanye West and Mike Myers

Kanye West vs. George Bush

Six words can do you in. When ‘Ye said, “George Bush doesn’t like black people,” it came back to haunt him, even though many agreed with the sentiment.

Pimp C vs. Russell Simmons & Jeezy

Maybe Pimp C woke up on the wrong side of the bed on one October day in 2007. In an interview with XXL, he went in on Houston rappers who need bodyguards and don’t properly represent the city. He called out The Source and journalists who cover Hip-Hop in general. And Pimp kind of called out Jeezy and anyone else rhyming about fraudulent prices. There will never be another Pimp C.

Artis Hughes

Given how disrespectful his passenger was, it’s hard not to side with Artis Hughes for giving ol’ girl a Street Fighter II-inspired uppercut. But Hughes got cracked with three days in Jail and a $1,000 fine for punching Sha’dea Lane during that infamous WorldStar video from 2012.
