A 17-year-old Bronx boy fell from a building rooftop while trying to evade police investigating a call of teens reportedly smoking marijuana. Hakeem Kuta died Saturday morning (April 4) from injuries after the six-story fall.

According to a story from the Huffington Post, Kuta fell last Thursday (April 2) after running away from the police with a 14-year-old friend. The police were responding to a call about a group of teenagers smoking marijuana in the lobby of a Bronx apartment building.

Reports say that one of the teenagers impeded the progress of the police by holding his arms out while the rest dashed off and headed to the roof.

More from Huffington Post:

Police have said Kuta appeared to have misjudged a ledge while backing away from approaching officers.

Police spokesman Stephen Davis said previously that officers had chased the teenager and other teenagers up the stairs after someone complained that they were smoking marijuana.

Davis said when the officers got to the roof, some teens jumped to another roof and ran away. But Kuta and his 14-year-old companion were pinned in by a dividing wall. Davis said Kuta then shuffled backward over a ledge and fell.

The New York Times reported that Kuta did not have a criminal record. According to a relative, Kuta was a native of Ghana.
