Soul singer Chrisette Michele caught hell last week when she accepted an invitation to perform at Donald “Cheeto Jesus” Trump’s inauguration.
Just about everyone from the culture slammed her decision, feeling that she was looking for a come-up in the worst of ways.
Today, Chrisette Michele stopped by The Breakfast Club and told Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy why her decision was made with good intentions, how it’s possibly going to be beneficial to the Black community, and why she’s disappointed in Spike Lee.
Here are the 12 things we learned from Chrisette Michele on The Breakfast Club.

1. The Invitation From Hell
She took Trump’s inauguration gig because she “needed them to see us. I needed them to see what we had to say and how we talk… And I was sayin’ ‘I don’t know if we’re being heard.’ So I had to go.” But Donald Trump didn’t even get to the inauguration ball until they were leaving so in that aspect it was a bust.
2. No Calls
She actually turned off her phone as soon as she decided to do it. She saw that social media storm coming.
3. Omarosa
It wasn’t Omarosa who called her to do the gig. It was a regular booking agency who offered the gig. She didn’t hesitate to accept the offer. Her management team objected to her decision but ultimately she saw it as an opportunity to be a voice for the Black community.
4. Barack Obama
She sang for Barack Obama before for free. Donald Trump had to pay for her services but she reiterates that she doesn’t need the money.
5. I Feel Your Pain
Chrisette says she’s as upset as the Black community is and feels she can use her platform to bring her views to the forefront such as the inauguration.
6. Spike Lee
She was disappointed in her “peer” Spike Lee because she feels he’s supposed to teach her how to create art and get it out. Also she says he never even called her about using her song which he said he decided against using. She said she would much rather have a conversation with her than a tweet.
7. ?uestlove
She says while Questlove would’ve paid her not to perform she would’ve paid him to perform.
8. Women’s March
She didn’t go to the Women’s March because “they don’t invite D-List celebrities.” But she says she was in the city during the march and supports it.
9. Symbolism At The Ball
Though she didn’t get a chance to speak on the racial injustice at the inauguration she felt her Basquiat skirt symbolized the lynching and brutalities that the Black community has gone through for hundreds of years.
10. Inaugural Ball Performance Benefits For The Black Community?
She says since her performance at the inauguration congressmen have been calling her to meet with her so she feels the backlash she’s gotten has been worth it if she can help make change.

11. Masturbating Manager?
Chrisette Michele’s former “road manager” used to masturbate in front of Jay-Z’s 40/40 club. Chrisette says he wasn’t her manager but made charity calls on her behalf.
12. Donald Trump Supporter?
She won’t say whether or not she’s a Donald Trump supporter but she says she didn’t vote for him nor does she agree with all his views. She is down with Black Lives Matter.
