Before Marvel’s Black Panther had the game on smash, Marvel’s Luke Cage had the internet going nuts thanks to its cleverly written storyline, solid and relatable characters, and overall Hip-Hop influenced theme (peep our season 1 recaps).
Now that season 2 is finally upon us the three biggest parts of what made the show such a success, writer Cheo Hodari Coker, heartthrob Simone Missick, and the show’s star Mike Colter swung through The Breakfast Club to talk about the show and it’s relevance to today’s American culture.
Taking and answering questions from the morning trio, the three legs to the Luke Cage tripod talk about why that Biggie portrait became a part of the show, the awkwardness of those sex scenes, and how 90’s music inspired the Bushmaster’s background story.
Here are the 8 things we learned from the cast of Luke Cage on The Breakfast Club.

1. Biggie
The brains behind the Luke Cage series, Cheo Hodari Coker says the reason he has the Biggie portrait in Harlem’s Paradise is because he interviewed Biggie right after Ready to Die dropped and was the last person to interview him before he was killed.
2. Notorious
Coker says he wish they could’ve gone “as hard as Straight Outta Compton” with Biggie’s biopic, Notorious. Even though he’s proud of the film he wouldn’t mind redoing it and making it more raw than it was.
3. Comic Book Geek?
Before becoming the woman of many men’s dreams, Simone Missick admits she wasn’t a comic book fan growing up but did read Archie.

4. If He Could…
Mike Colter says that if he had Luke Cage’s super powers the first thing he would’ve done is gone out and break the immigrant kids out of those Trump Camps down in Texas. Props.
5. Black Expectation
Coker feels that with the success of Luke Cage, Black Panther, and Black Lightning has “put the pressure back on us” to meet and even exceed expectations of future Black super hero projects.

6. Sexy Back
As for those numerous sex scenes that Mike Colter’s been involved in as Luke Cage, Mike Colter admits they are awkward and interestingly enough his scene with Misty Knight was Simone’s first sex scene ever. She was not ready.
7. Bushmaster Inspiration
Coker and Colter say that background for season 2’s villain Bushmaster was partly inspired by a 90’s reggae music playlist that consisted of Shabba Ranks, Mad Cobra, Beanie Man, etc.

8. Reg E. Cathey
The crew remembers that Luke Cage’s father in season 2, the late Reg E. Cathey had quit smoking but unfortunately was still diagnosed with cancer during the shooting of season 2. Even though his health was deteriorating throughout he still kept his spirits high and positive. R.I.P.
