While Chance The Rapper’s been racking up all kinds of praise and accolades for his musical artistry, his younger brother Taylor Bennett’s been hard at work carving out a niche in the game not only for himself, but for his city and the LGBT community he represents.
Today (Aug. 6), the Chicago rapper stopped by The Breakfast Club to plug his latest EP, Be Yourself, and speak about his life ever since he came out the closet.
Speaking about how his parents found out about his sexuality at the same time as the world to how the announcement changed the way he goes through his DM’s, Taylor Bennett isn’t just comfortable answering any question asked but he’s also comfortable living his best life.
Here are the 10 things we learned from Taylor Bennett on The Breakfast Club.
1. I’m Coming Out
Taylor says when he came out as bisexual on social media his parents really did find out with everyone else. He adds that his parents weren’t offended and his father actually assumed as much before Taylor came out. He also says no one’s treated him differently after coming out.
2. Young Thug
Taylor says Young Thug is an inspiration to him because he feels Thugger made it okay “to be yourself and to be weird, and to be different.”
3. Homophobic Jokes
Taylor says that the gay jokes don’t bother him being that he’s heard them all growing up around fools that have gay jokes for days. So anything he hears these days aren’t anything new under the sun.
4. Man of God
He says even though he and Chance grew up in the hood they actually spent a lot of time in church. He says that his faith is a big part of his life.
5. Chicago Forever
Taylor insists that regardless of success, he has absolutely no plans on leaving Chicago. He feels that anyone who makes it in Chicago needs to reinvest in their community and lend a helping hand to others in need. That being said he recognizes that some rappers have to get out because their level of fame and the street connections make them targets.
6. Kanye West
TB has no issue with Kanye West’s recent absence on the Chicago scene saying he’s done a lot for Chicago. “He’s Kanye. What Kanye gotta do for Chicago now? He’s Kanye West. He made me wanna rap. He made me know that this sh*t was even possible… Before anyone else it’s Kanye West.”
7. Run The Jewels
Taylor says that he recently gave up all his jewelry because it’s “dangerous” and “a magnet for evil.” He admits that he used to rock a lot of ice because he wasn’t confident in himself and wanted to be the “elephant in the room.” Growth, y’all.
8. Labels
Naturally, labels aren’t checking on Taylor’s availability being that his brother Chance went on to blow up without signing to anyone. They must figure that he’ll follow in big bro’s footsteps.
9. Down In The DM’s
Of course Taylor says that his DM’s get blown up and ever since he came out he’s been getting all kinds of crazy DM’s. So much so that he feels a tad bit uncomfortable going through his DM’s because he doesn’t know what’ll pop up. But he does actually interact with his real fans.
10. One Love
Regardless of what people might think, Taylor says he’s definitely the monogamous type, but just not right now. He’s young and wants to live life before settling down. That’s understandable.
